Go Solar Caravan! A Liter of Light Project

MUNTINLUPA, Philippines — In partnership with AIESEC Philippines, Impact Hub Manila and JCI Philippines launched the first ever GO SOLAR, Caravan! The project is set to engage three Science High Schools in Metro Manila, bringing together over 600 students who will not only be trained about solar energy but will be taught how to build lights.  And going beyond awareness, these lights will be used to bring hope to the chosen communities.

The first leg was done by JCI Alabang, JCI Paranaque Pambato, and JCI Paranaque Asinderas in partnership with AIESEC and Impact Hub MNL, in Muntinlupa Science High School last July 27-28, 2015.

In two days, the group shared with the students how renewable energy is changing the world. The first day was dedicated to the discussion of renewable energy. AIESEC exchange fellows Irma Stegmann from the Netherlands and Varun Chandwani from India shared with the students how their countries are using renewable energy.

The second day was dedicated to a workshop on the Liter of Light– the assembly of the Solar Daylight. With just an empty liter bottle, chlorine, sandpaper, metal sheet and water sealant, light can be installed even in off-grid areas. JCI Philippines National Chairman for Liter of Light, Danielle Lee, demonstrated the latest breakthrough in this project– the nightlight– a solar panel-switch assembly that can make the Solar Daylight useful even at night.  A total of 50 solar lamps were made.  Muntinlupa Councilor Robert Baes shared a few inspirational messages to the group.

“It was wonderful to work with the passionate and proactive members of AIESEC DLSU with this project. I look forward to more partnership projects with them,” said JCI Alabang President Aimee Flordeliza.

The Liter of Light is a National Project of JCI Philippines.  The GO SOLAR Caravan aims to catalyze the potential that is in the youth and change their mindset about their role in ending solar poverty.

The AIESEC Team is headed by Hannah Lusielle Obispo, with organizing committee Cath Olindo and Kate Ting. The local volunteers were Eve Villasanta, Jessa Faigones, Joker Sanga, and Jim Jimeno. The Exchange participants were Irma Stegmann and Varun Chandwani.
